Should Students Be Paid to Do Well in School?

Some high school students in France will be paid in exchange for attending classes on a regular basis.

This is exactly what's happening in a pilot program in France that started this month at three vocational high schools in disadvantaged suburds of Paris. Accounts will be set up for two classes containing around $3000 apiece. If the students maintain good attendance records and reach performance targets agreed upon with their teachers, reward payments will be added to their class account. But here's the catch: students can't go and spend the money on a new iPod or an Xbox but can only use it to finance a school-related project or endeavor. Philippe Vrand, president of Public School Students group: "...We should spend this money making sure vocational students can get into the programs they want. Instead, students are being paid off ot compensate [for] their boredom." In the US more than a dozen states have started rewarding students with cash for improved test scores and enrollment in advanced-placement courses.

What do you think? A good idea or a complete waste of money? Should money play such an important role in schools?

  1. In my opinion, students should feel the self-motivation to get good grades. They should not go to school and get good gradees JUST so they can get paid for it. Although compensation for good grades is nice, in my opinion it is a waste of money. The program they have in France where the money goes toward school-related projects is a good idea, but I don't think it;s a necessary thing. I don't think money/compensation for grades should have a role in schools...

  2. I dont think kids should get paid because its poinless. The kids are being paid for something that is easy, but can't spend it on anything they want. If you agree tell me. =)

  3. I think that that is a good idea because many students' families are low on money. Cutting out the money a family spends on supplies for projects and such a year would help a lot. This will also raise the attendance percentage becuase students will be motivated to come to school.

  5. i dont think that they should pay students to do to school for a certain amount of days with an average grade. thats definetly a waste of money they could be spending that money on the school to make it better. They definetly pointless to get paid for something thats easy to do. and your not alound to spend it on what you want thats not cool and pointless. I agree wit joe joe

  6. I agree with you that it's a waste of money to pay students to get good grades because it's your free choice to go to school. You prepare for your later life and if you ignore this chance, it's your problem. In other countries kids want to go to school, but their parents haven't got the money. You'll be alredy paid in your job, so I think money in school isn't a good idea. Maybe some students are more motivated but if they can't spend it on things they really want they might quit too...

  7. I also think this is a bad idea, because you can't motivate pupils by giving them money they should spend on projects for school. On the other hand it would be very good to have some money for projects, because you can learn things better when you do it practical. It would be better when the state would give every class just as much money for projects and if the money wouldn’t depend on the grades.
I wouldn't do more for school if we had a system like this.
